Perceptional Differences between Transaural, Ambisonics and Amplitude Panning
Plausible or even authentic auralizations of virtual acoustic scenes demand a wide scope of qualities in a reproduction method. It should provide sufficient accuracy regarding source localization, low coloration, a good impression of the environment in terms of reverberation and room size and should overall provide a good robustness regarding listener movement. It is therefore difficult to define a ‘best’ method for all situations. As Guastavino et al. (2007) already showed for a 2-D setup: different methods employ different strengths and weaknesses for different perceptual aspects. This study presents a comparison between the above-mentioned methods utilizing a 12 loudspeaker, 3-D setup as basis for a proposed technique to combine reproduction methods for room-acoustical auralizations.
